Assessment of Radiation Shielding Properties of Polymer-Lead (II) Oxide Composites

Long term exposure to very high levels of radiations from medical diagnostic centres, industries, nuclear research establishments and weapon development have resulted in health effects such as cancer acute radiation syndrome, hence the need for proper shielding. This paper investigated Epoxy-Lead (II) Oxide (PbO) composite The composites were prepared by dispersion microsized PbO particles into polymeric materials using effective melt-mixing method cast a 4 cm 6 rectangular aluminium Mold with thickness 5 mm was allowed set over night at room temperature. gamma ray attenuation ability studied transmission or coefficient determination energy. Three sources Ba-133, Cs-137 Co-60 employed. density, linear coefficient, half value layer (HVL), relaxation length heaviness samples determined. measured values increased increasing filler concentration all energies. It also noticed that 40 % 50 attenuates more relative other under study. maximum attained found energy 662 keV. been possessed gamma-ray characteristics among sample certain photon range (0.08 MeV–1.332 MeV) useful biological shielding against rays.
